Running towards the end of a season in which he'd won two Olympic gold medals and just become a father, Farah is,unsurprisingly, content to do just enough to keep the home fans happy. Two good Kenyans in the field but neither had much answer to Farah's usual devastating kick ...to this day I still don't understand what "yeah, but no" means....

The great Henry Rono ,without doubt my all time favourite Kenyan runner! Here, in the Ivo Van Damme meeting in Brussels ,1981,he continues an astonishing comeback. With Kenya pulling out of the 1980 Olympic Games he'd started the 1981 season overweight and out of form (15.40 for a 5K!) His main problem had always been the booze, but somehow he quite literally ran himself fit over the following m...

Kathy Cook (nee Smallwood) was at the top of British sprinting from the late 1970's until the mid 1980's.She uniquely held the 100 metres(11.10),200 metres(22.10) and the 400 metres (49.43)UK records and was a regular in the national relay teams. Unfortunately her career coincided with the rather dubious drug fuelled Eastern Bloc era and subsequently often had to make do with lesser medals and ...

I wasn't born until the mid 70's but am a big fan of Lillian nevertheless, after learning about her many years ago. That anchor leg in the relay still astounds me every time I see it,what a terrible tragedy that she left this world at such a young age.RIP Lillian.

Though never quite achieving greatness in individual events, put a relay vest on Kriss Akabusi and it was worth 20yards to the team, and to chase down the individual 400m champion was incredible. This performance cemented all four's positions in the hearts of British athletics fans.

Exactly how the Event is supposed to go hop step & jump he just glided no jerky movements technique was absolutely Textbook! I hear he could Powerclean about 150kg which for someone about 70kg like him is phenomenal so his power to weight ratio was outstanding

Hiya... pretty cool family link there! I lifted this off a DVD called something like "The Great Milers" some 15 years ago. UA-cam put up a copyright sign but I can't find to whom the claim belongs. The DVD was copyrighted to the BBC but I assume they would have licensed the footage? The disc might be around on eBay still and feel free to download this if it helps? All the best!

A few comments. First leg for Kenya was by Charles Asati, who actually ran ~0.6 sec faster than Matthews. The latter did not have his best Olympics here, won the individual 400m run four years later at Munich. Politics aside, if Tommie Smith had been on the US team (in place of Vince Matthews), their final time would have been under 2:55. Smith was perhaps the greatest 400 m runner ever. In 1966, he beat Lee Evans head to head at San Jose; Evans was the best runner in 67 and 68, Smith set a wR in that race. At the end of the 1966 season, Smith took down Wendell Mottley in London. Mottley had been setting the world on fire that year, but lost to Smith - probably my all-time favorite runner.

Apart from the obvious Brit glory, I forever remember Straub's reaction in this race. As he crosses the line he feels like has won the Earth by getting 2nd! So he had: it was incredibly gutsy to go for it 600m out, and his best hope beforehand was orobably to beat 'the rest' and get bronze, but when he'd split the big two he felt 'wow'!

Cram/Coe /Ovett all great . But Cram beat Cruz over 800m and Aquita over 1500m when the later were at their best . Coe lost to Cruz in 1984 over 800m. Never met Aquita (avoided him ) For me Cram was a combination of Coe and Ovett. A great racer like the later and a winner against the clock like the later.
